The Airport Fashion Guide: How To Start Your Holiday In Style

It’s time to get ready for our holiday plans to the idyllic destinations we have lined up! Packing for the summer is fun, as you can fit more light items in your suitcase than in the winter. Your holiday attire consists of vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and statement accessories.

But amidst the excitement around sun dresses and shorts, we tend to forget to plan one of the most important outfits – the airport ensemble, as it needs to be strategically selected to help us go through security quicker and without hassle.

Here is how to plan your airport outfit with ease, comfort, and style.

The shoes

The shoes are the statement piece of the airport attire. They need to be comfortable in case you have to walk long distances at the airports, such as Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, and Dubai International Airport. They also need to be practical for your destination and match the rest of your wardrobe. But most importantly, you need to be able to take them off easily, or ideally, not at all.

As a general policy, most airports make you take your shoes off at security check, especially if you’re wearing boots or shoes with big soles where you can hide things. It’s not a matter of luck but a matter of rules.

These are some of the most airport-friendly shoes:

  • Flat sandals. They’re incredibly comfortable, look stylish, and are ideal for a summer holiday. You might even get away with not taking them off through security, especially if you select sandals without metal buckles.
  • Ballet flats. You can never go wrong with a classic pair of ballet flats that are easy to slip on and off.
  • Lace-up sneakers. If comfort is your priority, then a good pair of sneakers is your best bet. They can be paired with pretty much anything and are great for walking, especially if you’re planning a city break or a nature escape.
  • Slip-on sneakers. They’re ideal for a long-haul flight and can easily be paired with a skirt or a dress once you get off the plane.

Avoid wearing stilettos unless you’re heading straight from the airport to your dinner date. They most likely feature metal bits that will be detected through security. Plus, they’re not the most comfortable shoes in the world.

The outfit

If you’re travelling in the summer, your suitcase will most likely be packed with sundresses, shorts, and tank tops, and sweatpants won’t be on your agenda.

While tracksuits might not be suitable for the summer, the season allows for yet another comfort staple – flowy and breathable garments. Think linen shorts, jumpsuits in floral patterns, and wide-leg summer pants.

These are some of the most airport-friendly outfits:

  • A jumpsuit. Avoid the hurry in the morning and slip in your flower-patterned jumpsuit. It’s synonymous with comfort and is very stylish too. You can pair it with any of the airport-friendly shoes and look stunning both on and off the plane.
  • Wide leg pants with a crop top. There is a variety of wide-leg pants in all colours and patterns. They provide ease of movement and also keep you slightly warmer than shorts. Pair them with a plain crop top made of cotton, one of the most breathable fabrics. This is a staple outfit you can wear on your holiday too.
  • Linen shorts and a loose top. Linen is a 100% natural material known for its breathability and temperature-regulating properties. It keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. With the colder temperatures on a plane and the heat waves in your destination, linen will keep you sweet the whole time. Pair it with a loose top for extra comfort.
  • Biker shorts and a top. If you wish to channel the sporty vibe, go for biker shorts. They’re very trendy right now and extremely stretchy. Pair them with a tank or a crop top and your favourite pair of lace-up sneakers. With biker shorts, you have an outfit for a hike, a bike ride, or a sightseeing day.

Layers

We all know airplane cabins tend to get quite cool during the flight. If you’re only wearing a jumpsuit or biker shorts and a top, you might get cold. That’s why it’s important to bring layers.

These are the best layers and accessories to bring with you:

  • A light jacket. Choose the one that matches the rest of your wardrobe so you can wear it on your holiday
  • A cute cardigan. You can never go wrong with a cardi!
  • Socks. They’ll come in handy in case you get cold.
  • A bandana or a scrunchie. Avoid your hair getting in the way of you and the passengers around you by tying it up. This will be useful in the hot weather too.
  • A bum bag. That’s where you will store your passport, phone, and boarding pass instead of roaming through the debris of your backpack every time you need to show your documents.

With so many people travelling by plane, the airport has become a fashion runway for holidaymakers. Blending style with comfort, the airport style is one to take note of next time you prepare for your holiday.
