Sporting greats to take part in annual tournament at The Springs Golf Club for charity

A host of sporting legends will be taking part in this year’s annual Springs Legends Golf Tournament in Oxfordshire to raise money for charity.

Former rugby union players Max Evans, Louis Deacon, Chris Wyles and Paul Doran-Jones will tee off with Samoan former rugby star Freddie Tuilagi, Olympic gold-medallist rower Greg Searle, former England Test cricketers Nick Compton and Matthew Hoggard plus World Golf Trick Shot Champion Geoff Swain.

Money raised from the day will go to the Matt Hampson Foundation, which helps to improve the quality of life and wellbeing for young people who have sustained catastrophic injury through sport or the pursuit of other physical recreational activities.

Matt was left paralysed from the neck down when a scrum collapsed during a training session with the England Under-21 Squad in 2005. He established the Foundation in 2011 to assist those who had experienced similar injuries, both practically by offering financial aid to assist with equipment, technology or just every day expenses and by offering mentoring, friendship and education.

The 18-hole Texas Scramble tournament will take place on Wednesday, May 15th at The Springs Golf Club in Wallingford, Oxford.

Last year’s inaugural event raised £16,500 for the charity ReachOut UK which works with young people in disadvantaged communities.

The Springs Golf Club in Wallingford is located in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the challenging course, which is spread over 133 acres, was designed by former Ryder Cup Captain Brian Huggett.

The club is owned and operated by leading holiday resort operator Darwin Escapes which has invested heavily in it since acquiring the course in 2017.

Lindsey Esse, Managing Director of Darwin Escapes, which operates The Springs, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the second Legends golf day here at The Springs and raising as much money as possible for the Matt Hampson Foundation.

“We have completed some major improvements to the course since the last Legends tournament and I’m sure this will mean that all the participants will have a memorable and challenging day of golf.”

Former Leicester Tigers and England International Louis Deacon said: “It’s fantastic to have the opportunity to play at The Springs for the first time. I’ve heard great things! On behalf of Matt and everyone at The Foundation, huge thanks go to Darwin for such tremendous support.”
