Introducing Discarded Grape Skin Vodka: an innovative grape-based vodka, made using waste-products recovered from the wine making process. This is the latest zero-waste release from Discarded Spirits Co. – the sustainable spirits brand has again transformed what would otherwise be trash, and turned it into unexpected treasure.

The launch of Discarded Grape Skin Vodka coincides with the re-release of the full sustainable spirits range – which includes Discarded Cascara Vermouth and Discarded Banana Peel Rum all now in 100% recyclable packaging, from glass to cork to label. Pioneering the sustainable spirits movement, Discarded Spirits Co. continues to challenge perceptions on waste and encourage consumers to creatively reuse ingredients otherwise destined to be thrown away by adding to its growing sustainability portfolio.

Discarded Grape Skin Vodka will be launching in store at Waitrose, at a time when 43% of consumers* plan to use zero waste ingredients at home and 34% of UK consumers* plan to be more environmentally friendly.

An exceptionally smooth, sustainable vodka with a luscious mouthfeel that strikes the perfect balance with aromas of green apple, lychee and almond croissant, Discarded Grape Skin Vodka has tasting notes of Williams pear, guava and starfruit with a bold pink peppercorn finish, and is best served in a Grape Skin Martini for an elegant, spirit-forward tipple.

Global Discarded Ambassador, Sam Trevethyen, said: “We make the base of Discarded Grape Skin Vodka by distilling all the parts of the wine-making process that are normally discarded: the skins, stems, the seeds… otherwise known as the pomace. We chose a Chardonnay grape from Spain for its exceptional clarity and its subtle yet complex flavour profile.

“With the rise of the no and low category, there has been an increased demand for high-quality dealcoholised wine. And one of the waste products created by dealcoholising wine is ‘wine alcohol’, which actually retains a lot of the flavour of the original grape. Typically sold on or in most cases, destroyed, we instead wanted to celebrate the exquisite essence of this Chardonnay ‘wine alcohol’ by blending it into our Discarded Grape Skin Vodka – creating something totally new, innovative, sustainable, and utterly delicious.”

Discarded UK Brand Manager, Sasha Filimonov, adds: “We are setting the bar for the spirits industry and challenging industry norms – including with our innovative, 100% recyclable bottle and packaging. We now have fantastic features such as caps made from 100% recycled tin, labels made from fasson cane fibre (made from sugarcane waste), a unique cork that repurposes excess ground cork granules (only 30% of harvested cork makes the grade for the drinks industry) and a bottle that’s made from at least 65% recycled glass content – with scope to increase as our brand grows.”

Discarded Spirits Co. wants to invite everyone to join them in the sustainability movement – one step at a time – as we celebrate what was once wasted and is now treasured.

The Discarded Grape Skin Vodka launch comes at an exciting time for Discarded who have today announced a partnership kicking off this summer with pioneering zero-waste chef Doug McMaster of Silo. The Zero Waste Cooking School launches this summer and is a collaborative YouTube channel created by Doug and content creator Victor Frankowski started during the lockdowns of 2020.

Doug said of the collaboration, “Zero Waste Cooking School aims to demystify zero waste cooking and bring it to your kitchen, with weekly episodes and exciting globally inspired recipes. We also take you behind the scenes at Silo the world’s first zero waste restaurant and discover the inspiring stories behind its supply chain and network of collaborators.”

“Food and drinks go hand in hand and we are excited about partnering with Discarded Spirits Co, who share our passion for a wasteless future and tasty produce. We are excited about the stories and adventures this partnership will enable as well as discovering more about zero waste in the drinks industry.”
