Monterey Gin Wins Gold Outstanding at the International Wine & Spirit Competition
Monterey Gin has been recognized as one of the world’s top gins as it was awarded Gold Outstanding in the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC).
More than 800 gins were submitted to the highly prestigious competition. Split into two groups – London Dry and Contemporary, each entry was blind tasted by an expert panel of 300 industry judges. Monterey Gin scored 98/100 in the London Dry category, one of only three London Dry Gin’s to be marked so highly. The classic style gin is made with 11 botanicals, including Maté (an Argentinian tea), Gentian Root and Sea Buckthorn and distilled on the Cornish coast. The panel praised Monterey Gin as a “magnificent elixir” for its “full, dry, resinous and aromatic taste”.
Crafted on the Helford River in Cornwall amongst Monterey pines, Monterey Gin is inspired by a trip to the Tyrolean Alps where three friends were discussing their love affair with gin and challenged themselves to make a classic but distinctive tipple. The organic spirit is hand crafted in small batches of 450 bottles at a time and is infused with 11 botanicals, mixed with organic grain spirit and de-mineralised water in the alembic copper still, Shirley, to create its unique aromatic flavour.
Co-Founder and Distiller, Simon Finemore, comments: “Over the past few years gin has really had its moment, with Britain having 1,700 different gins alone. It’s amazing that our small distillery, nestled on the Helford Passage, can compete on the international stage and come out on top, alongside the very best in the world!”
According to the Wine & Spirit Trade Association, last year saw over 83 million bottles of gin sold in the UK worth around £2.6 billion, with gin sales almost doubling in value in just two years1.
Monterey Gin is bottled at 43% ABV and is available at select retailers and online at www.montereygin.co.uk for £43.00 for 70cl.
